The Gap is Becoming a Socially Conscious Company

The Gap Inc is becoming a socially conscious company. They are also positively affecting their subsidiaries Old Navy, Banana Republic, Piperlime, and Athleta. Over the last decade Gap Inc has put into place an internal monitoring system for corporate and supplier accountability. They are putting emphasis on caring for the laborers in supplier factories and making sure that child labor violations are dealt with. In compliance with the International Labor Organization if a child laborer is discovered in a factory, the child is removed from work, enrolled in school, but wages are still paid to the family to take care of their financial needs or an adult from that family replaces the child as the employee. The Gap also has taken a stance against the purchasing of Uzbekistan’s cotton.

There are some things Gap Inc can do to become an even better company. Allow for transparency of who their suppliers are and work to increase wages for factory employees to a living wage instead of minimum wage. Over the years, Gap Inc has listened to consumers and labor rights organizations. They have learned from the past and are moving forward as a socially conscious company. Other apparel companies can learn a lot form the gains Gap Inc has made. Gap Inc is making a difference towards ending labor abuses. This is a strong preventive step to protecting against human trafficking.
